Mystery of the Maya: Digitally remastered from the large format film
originally presented in IMAX theaters, this picturesque documentary explores
the ruins of the ancient Mayan civilization, including examinations of their
palaces, temples, and mysterious pyramids. Shot at numerous sacred sites throughout
Mexico and Central America, including the ruins at Palenque, Chichén Itzá and
Uxmal, the film explores the culture, science and history of the Mayan people.
Witness the Splendor of the Mayan Civilization
While Europe slumbered in the midst of the Dark Ages, the innovative Mayan
civilization had already charted the heavens, evolved the only true writing
system native to the Americas and made tremendous strides in mathematics. Without
metal tools, beasts of burden or even the wheel, the Maya were able to construct
vast cities.
Directed by Barrie Howells and Roberto Rochin, the story is told through a
modern-day archaeologist and a young Mayan descendant who explore ruins and
legends to unlock the secrets of the past. Audiences will feel as if they are
actually there when they witness archaeologist Alberto Ruz's 1952 discovery
of a secret burial tomb deep inside Palenque's Temple of the Inscriptions.
What happened to the Mayan people? How did they come to be? Why was this isolated
culture so advanced? These questions and many others are explored in The Mystery
of Maya. |
