Everyone knows the legend of Lizzie Borden, the self-made orphan: Lizzie
Borden took an axe and gave her mother 40 whacks. When she realised what
she'd done, she gave her father 41.
On April 4, 1892, New England spinster Lisbeth “Lizzie” Borden discovered
the bodies of her father and stepmother in their Fall River, Massachusetts
home. Both had been brutally slaughtered with an axe. Though Lizzie herself
was the prime suspect, there was insufficient evidence to convict her
of murder, and she was acquitted of the crimes. To this day, scholars
and true crime buffs debate the guilt or innocence of Miss Borden.
The Curse of Lizzie Borden puts a new twist on the old tale. Lizzie’s
spirit is back to raise a little vengeful hell. This is a slasher film
built around the idea that Lizzie Borden’s evil spirit lives on, bent
on revenge for being (she claims) falsely accused of the murders. Danielle
De Luca’s performance as the Borden madwoman is so far over-the-top that
it’s hard not to enjoy watching her. Horror fans with a sense of humor
should get a laugh out of scenes of blood splashing literally everywhere
and prop heads rolling across the lawn.
Nestled within a quiet California town, a museum dedicated to the legend
of Lizzie Borden has been opened. Cassy, a beautiful college student,
is drawn to the museum, taking a summer job as a tour guide. The folklore
surrounding the Lizzie Borden legend begins to consume her every waking
moment. She begins dressing, acting and talking as if she were Lizzie
Borden.
After she is given a real axe, a replica of the dress supposedly worn
during the murders and the actual brooch given to Borden by her stepmother,
Cassy becomes haunted by bloody visions, violent nightmares and dreams
of blood and death. One by one her friends are found murdered and her
boyfriend, Andrew, begins to fear the worst. Cassy may be next!
Is some madman killing off all of their friends? Or has the ghost of
Lizzie Borden come back for a bloody rampage? Will Cassy and Andrew be
able to stop the killer, or will they fall victim to the same fate that
Lizzie’s parents did so many years ago? Until the final bloody axe falls,
no one is safe from the Curse of Lizzie Borden!
