With over 100,000 hours of digital rendering required to create the computer graphics imagery in the film, Encounter in the Third Dimension represents an incredible achievement in digital filmmaking. Audiences encounter a re-creation of one of the earliest 3D movies ever made as well as classic film clips from Hollywood's 3D heyday during the 1950's.

The movie begins in the digitally created Institute of 3-D Technology, where the bright, but slightly disorganized professor (played by Stuart Pankin), offers the audience a crash course in 3D technology. Not content with dry scientific explanations, the professor presents Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, to show off his latest innovation, a new 3-D process called "Real-O-Vision."

When his demonstration goes awry, the professor enlists the services of his wisecracking assistant, a flying robot named Max, to entertain and educate the audience about the wonders of 3-D. To explain the history of 3D technology, Max takes the audience on a magical journey through time, from early cave drawings to the invention of the world's first 3D stereoscopic viewer in 1838.

There are many other cool 3D visuals in this movie, including a 100 foot liquid chrome spider, a virtual roller-coaster ride and bio-morphic 3D skeletons. Determined to prove that 3-D is bigger and better than ever, the professor lets the audience take a sneak peek at his collection of some of the best 3-D creations of the last 20 years. He proudly shows off exciting scenes from several theme park films, including James Cameron's Terminator II 3D.

With newfound confidence, the Professor again cranks up his Real-O-Vision machine and this time it actually works - Elvira comes to life in amazing 3D and conjures up a feast for the eyes.
